The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.– Eleanor Roosevelt
2006 probably was one of my best years, how could it be? Yes of course, because in that year I could receive many acceptances from many universities. Alhamdulillah, finally I could continuing my study and… in the same time, I have so many options. I got Quota scholarship in Univ. of Oslo, ADS in UNSW or ANU, Mombukagakusho U2U to Civil eng in Univ. of Tokyo, Ocean Eng in Univ of Tokyo and Coastal Environmental Informatics in where I am now, Tokyo Tech. I will never forget that moment.
Before I went to Japan, I had an opportunity to go to Korea with full support from PICES. Now after I arrived in Japan, I got chances to go to Mongolia with ACCU-UNESCO’s support and 4 months course on Human security and poverty reduction at United Nations Univ. in Tokyo given by famous Profs from many nations. I got those chances after submitting my CV, application form, and motivation like usual as fellowship’s procedures.
From those experiences, I think, I am at the mature stage to find scholarships. Because I every time I applied, I have a big chance to win it (75% probably). Then the following question…WHY? HOW I COULD GET SO MANY CHANCES? I try to fulfill your curiosity. But beforehand, I would like to quote a word from CEO of Apple.
Steve Jobs: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, but you can only connect them looking backward, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever because believing that the dots will connect downs the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.”
So I could not guarantee 100% to what I said will happen again to you. I just share my dots to you by looking backward. Of course I hope it will work to you too. Then you can draw your own dots by looking forward, but still you can’t connect either :p.
From my title we know that this is an active form. I like an active form, because it has something more than just a meaning. Furthermore active form indicates clearly who the subject is, what the object is and what the subject should do to reach the object. Active form makes us to do an ACTION and this sentence become meaning less if the subject doesn’t do anything.
I want to share these topics, for scholars who have a big desire to study, but he/she doesn’t know what thing he/she should do at first and after.
At first I would like to remind you a power of mind. Don’t look behind and don’t look to small failures that you’ve made. You have to clear your road and set your destiny. Don’t give up too early, remember your mind’s power. What you have to do is set up your wish. Dream it as if you already have it so you can control your mind more. But you can’t enjoy your dream everyday without act. Then you will have your dream come closer and closer.
George Bernard Shaw: “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will”.
What you have to remember:
>> Look to your self and ask honestly, are you sure you want to study abroad or you just want to show off to others. “Great minds have purposes, little minds have wishes.” – Washington Irving
>> Make your self at top. It is better if you have comparison. If you are not good enough, find your strengths. For example some one who is below than you and he/she could get a scholarship and you haven’t.
>> Be a trend setter, don’t just be a follower. Choose unfamiliar subjects/topics is better, I think. Especially when you make proposal. This is also important for students who want to choose their specialty in the 4th year. “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” – Lao-Tzu
>> Follow the rules. If you want to play in this game then you have to obey the rules. TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC are important. Please read other motivations on how to raise your score. “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” – Thomas Jefferson
>> Make a nice look and short CVs. Don’t make the referee ‘vertical falling’ your CV.
>> Motivation letter: strong opening paragraph and ending it with your clear future carrier.
During an interview:
>> Learn how to introduce for self. Make it friendly and speak clearly. If you past this step, it will bring your confidence.
>> Dress well. Don’t use suite if you don’t want but you have to use soft/natural color ironed shirt. Don’t use your shirt, if you use public transportation. Put it in your bag. Find your comfortable custom during interview.
>> Speak to their eyes and bring your body language into a rhythm of your voice.
>> Show your respect and don’t tell a lie and don’t arrogance as if you know everything.
>> Tell them your achievement but don’t arrogance. Clever and carefully in saying this. I suggest you to prepare first.
>> Say anything when they give you a time to ask.. Promise them something good, quote a beautiful words or anything.
This is just my additional information. You have to learn more to put so much effort to cope your weak point. Finally, Don’t give the rest to God, but always remember God in every process not only at the end.
See you soon somewhere and sometimes.
